Cinema Mythologica
Cinema Mythologica is an annual film series at Amsterdam cinema De Uitkijk in which we explore the mythological sublayers of iconic films.
About Cinema Mythologica
Love robots, doppelgängers, and tragic heroes — behind these iconic cinematic figures lies a mythical past. Although most films are set in the present or the future, classical myths play a significant role throughout Hollywood. Countless films draw inspiration from archetypal narrative patterns and mythical characters — even, or perhaps especially, when they explore contemporary themes such as AI, gender, and psychology.
Every year, I curate the Cinema Mythologica series at the De Uitkijk cinema. In this series, we uncover the hidden mythical layers within film history — from Oedipus complexes to narcissistic algorithms. Each screening begins with a brief introduction in English, inviting you to view the film through a mythological lens.
